Victor Kills Elizabeth and Clerval

It can be argued that Victor and the monster are the same person. Victor really killed William, Clerval, and Elizabeth. I think that Victor murders Clerval because he is jealous of him. He wishes that he could be happy like Clerval, but all he can think about is the monster he created and the death of William and Justine. When Victor and Clerval are tralevling Victor says, "In Clerval I saw the image of my former self..." Victor wishes that he could go back to being his former self- go back to the days before he created the monster. Victor also says, "...and yet my enjoyment was embittered both by the memory of the past and the anticipation of the future." Victor can not get his mind off of the monster he created and the monster that he is about to create. He is jealous that Clerval does not have to worry about these things and can live his life in peace. Victor kills Clerval when he is on his boat and he falls asleep. He thinks that he is sleeping, but he really kills Clerval during this time. His boat ends up near the place where Clerval was found dead. Victor kills Elizabeth because he unconsciously blames her for killing his mom. Victor's mom caught the scarlet fever from Elizabeth so if Elizabeth was not there his mom never would have caught scarlet fever and died. He kills her when they are at the inn after their wedding. No one else was in the room with Elizabeth when she was killed so there are no witnesses to say that Victor did not kill her. Since Victor is telling Walton this story he could have lied and said that the monster killed Elizabeth when it was really Victor that killed her. He also could believe so strongly that there is a monster that he thinks it is the truth and does not realize he is lying. His mind is unstable. This can be seen when he goes to sleep he pretends that everyone is still alive and he talks to them.
